Açaï is an important part of medicinal and culinary traditions of native tribes from the Amazon. They use the young shoots of acai (heart of palm) as well as berries that look like blueberries or blackberries. Açaï fruits are relatively rich in protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Before its democratization in the 1990s, as some of their constituents were rapidly deteriorating after harvest, the fruit were usually consumed fresh and rarely seen out of the places where the plant grew naturally.
